3 charged in death of man left in garbage can
A man and two teens were charged with the murder of a man who was found dead Monday in a trash can on the South Side.
Bryan Perkins, 32, and two boys, 17 and 16, were all charged with first degree murder and concealment of a homicidal death, police said. Bond for the juveniles was set at $1 million; Perkins has not yet had a bond hearing.
The victim, Ernest Pritchett III, 51, was found about 10 a.m. Monday by Chicago Streets and Sanitation workers who were collecting garbage on the 700 block of West 61st Street in the Englewood neighborhood, police said.
Prosecutors said Perkins was outside his house when Pritchett came into his front yard. Perkins asked the victim for money he owed him, and when Pritchett said he didn’t have it, Perkins took a piece of a fence and began to hit the victim in the head, according to court documents.
The two teens joined in, kicking and stomping Pritchett as he lay in the front yard. Perkins then picked up a “big” rock and hit the victim, according to documents.
Perkins then got a large rolling garbage can and put Pritchett’s body inside. He rolled the garbage can several blocks down an alley where he left it, prosecutors said.
Perkins went upstairs in his home after moving the garbage can and confronted a witness who saw the beating, calling the witness a coward for not joining in, the documents said.
Perkins then beat up the witness and told another witness to throw away a garbage bag full of clothes that the trio were wearing when they attacked Pritchett, the documents said.
The bag of clothes was later found across the alley from the house where Pritchett was beaten and the piece of fence used in the murder was found with the body, prosecutors said.
The trio were arrested and all three admitted to being involved in the beating and concealing the body, prosecutors said. The three were also identified as the people who beat Pritchett.
Pritchett’s body was found near a Safe Passage route for children who were moved to Nicholson Technical Academy at 6006 S. Peoria St.
