Denver anti gang advocate held in Park Hill shooting

Terrance Roberts, a former gang member who became one of the Denver’s leading anti-gang violence activists, has been arrested in connection with the shooting of another man Friday night near his office in Park Hill, police confirmed Saturday morning.

Roberts, 37, was being held in the Downtown Denver Detention Center on charges including suspicion of first-degree assault and attempted murder, records show. He was being held on $100,000 bond.

The victim, an adult male, remained in critical condition Saturday morning, police said.

The shooting was reported about 6:15 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the Nancy P. Anschutz Community Center at East 33rd Avenue and Holly Street, which houses, among other businesses, the office of Roberts’ Prodigal Son Initiative as well as the Jack A.Vickers Boys and Girls Club, which will hold its official grand opening next month.

Denver police offered few details about the shooting but said the victim was struck multiple times. A police spokesman said it was too soon to determine whether the shooting was gang-related.

Roberts’ antiviolence organization, the Prodigal Son, was scheduled to hold a unity rally in the area at the same time as the shooting.

Roberts grew up in Park Hill and spent the majority of his teenage years as a member of the Bloods street gang. After suffering a gunshot wound to the back in 1993 and making several trips to jail, Roberts said he decided to turn his life around.

His nonprofit group Prodigal Son mentors at-risk Denver youth and organizes athletic and educational events in the community. Roberts has also been a frequent speaker at area schools on the subject of gang awareness.

The community center where the shooting took place was built on the ruins of the Holly Square Shopping Center at East 33rd Avenue and Holly Street, which was burned down in 2008 by Crips in retaliation for the killing of their local leader Michael Asberry.
