Five charged in latest heroin overdose death
The heroin death of a 26-year-old Green Bay man last month has led to charges against five people, including his live-in girlfriend.
Green Bay police say Matthew Odea died in his apartment at 111 S. Platten St. on Feb. 25. Police and firefighters dispatched to the home found evidence of drug paraphernalia and heroin use, police said.
Three people were charged with first-degree reckless homicide for allegedly providing the heroin that led to Odea’s death. They include Courtney Burke, 19, of New Franken, who also was charged with felony possession of narcotics and a misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. She is scheduled to plead in Brown County Circuit Court April 15.
Brittany Mefford, 23, of Green Bay, faces a single count of first-degree reckless homicide. She is scheduled for an April 3 preliminary hearing.
Dylan Vorpahl, 19, of the town of Scott, also was charged with reckless homicide, possession of narcotics and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He is scheduled for an adjourned initial appearance Wednesday. He already faced charges of delivery of heroin, possession of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia from an earlier court filing. It’s unclear if those offenses are related to Odea’s death.
Odea’s girlfriend, Rachel Bartell, 22, is awaiting a preliminary hearing Wednesday on charges of delivery of heroin, maintaining a drug trafficking place and misdemeanor charges of possession of illegally obtained prescription drugs and drug paraphernalia.
Also charged in connection with the case is Brianna Lancour, 20, of Sobieski, who is scheduled to plead April 15 to a charge of delivery of heroin.
Others may be charged as the investigation continues, police said.
Odea’s death was the second this year and the 14th since Jan. 1, 2012, from heroin, police said.
