Duluth woman fatally stabbed; suspect in custody
A 46-year-old Duluth woman was fatally stabbed in a Central Hillside apartment on Sunday, and a 29-year-old woman from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is in jail facing murder charges for the crime.
Duluth police said Lisa Kay Davis was stabbed in a residence in the 100 block of East Fifth Street, a block below Nettleton Elementary School, just before noon Sunday; she died from her injuries at St. Luke’s hospital. Officers apprehended the suspect in a back bedroom of the residence.
Later in the day, police tape blocked access to the duplex at 108½ E. Fifth Street, on the alley below Fifth Street.
Carl Moody, who has owned the duplex for more than 20 years and lives there, said he was in the upstairs unit at the time of the stabbing in the lower unit. He said neither Davis nor the suspect lived there, but said the women knew the renter. Moody said he had known Davis for decades, and that she had two adult daughters and several grandchildren.
“She was a good gal,” Moody said. “She never treated anybody rough. She tried to talk to everybody, (tell things) the way it was, but she didn’t strike anybody.”
One of her daughters, Amber Davis, remembered her mother in an email to the News Tribune early Monday.
“She was kind and loving never a fighter and she was the greatest grandma ever. She loved her mother, myself, my sister Misti, and my four children. Every single day she is at peace now,” she wrote. “We are sad but learning to celebrate her life and not be angry.”
The suspect, who is from Marquette, Mich., was new to the neighborhood, Moody said. He had seen her only a couple of times. Authorities said Davis and the suspect knew each other.
Moody said there may have been a dispute between the two women over the suspect allegedly taking some of Davis’ possessions. But he said there was no audible commotion downstairs until Davis screamed after being wounded.
Duluth police released no information about a possible motive for the crime, saying it is still an active investigation. An autopsy will be conducted by the St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the official cause of death.
It is the second homicide in the city of Duluth this year. Bryan Alan Starnes, 27, was found stabbed and bludgeoned to death in his Lincoln Park residence on March 9; a 17-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree murder in that case.
It’s also the second homicide in the Central Hillside neighborhood in less than six months. Kevin Tyman, 54, was fatally stabbed at his duplex on East Seventh Street on Dec. 21. Police have not yet made an arrest in that homicide, which happened about three blocks from Sunday’s stabbing.
There were two homicides in Duluth in 2012, and none in 2011.
