Suspect in Louisiana Robbery Arrested in Texas

Durel Langston accused of robbery and attempted murder in St. Claude.

A 21-year-old man accused of attempted first-degree murder stemming from a December 2012 armed robbery, was in New Orleans police custody Saturday after being arrested in Sierra Blanca, Texas. Police arrested Durel Langston on March 23 in Sierra Blanca, a town 88 miles east of El Paso, Texas, on an arrest warrant issued in December.

Langston is accused of attempting to murder Dawan Gibson during a drug transaction in the 1600 block of Montegut Street on the morning of Dec. 11, 2012.

According to testimony provided in the arrest warrant, Gibson met with Langston, who he then knew only as ‘Ruger,’ to conduct a narcotics transaction when Langston told him, “The thing between you and ‘Money’ ain’t going to work out, son.”

Langston then told Gibson to hand over the marijuana, promising to let him leave if he did so, the arrest warrant states. Gibson claimed that as Langston took the marijuana and turned to leave, he then suddenly turned back, closed his eyes and fired off a shot that struck Gibson in the arm. The shooter then opened his eyes and fired several more shots, striking Gibson in the chest before the victim fled on foot, the arrest warrant states.

NOPD Detective Johnny Magee met the following day with Gibson at the hospital and Gibson told the detective that his attacker’s first name was Durel. An arrest warrant was issued on Dec. 27 after Gibson positively identified Langston in a photographic line-up.

Subsequent investigation revealed that Durel Langston had been previously arrested on marijuana charges.

Langston will be charged with attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery, illegal discharge of a firearm and illegal carrying of a firearm.
